I recently was quoted a price of $20,000 dollars for a one word domain name by a domain name squatter. I used to get upset at these mental migits because they'd squat on useful names that engineers could likely do something with. The problem is, not every engineer on the block has an extra $20 grand laying around! Not to mention if I did pay the money, that a$$hole certainly didn't do anything to deserve it. At any rate I used to get quite upset.
The funny thing is, these guys seem to have shot themself in the foot! Take a look at Alexa's top ten list and you'll see what I mean! None of the top sites are basic English words, and many are a combination of more than one word.
- Google (Not an English word)
- Facebook (Two English words that make no sense together)
- Yahoo! (Pretty sure that one isn't in the dictionary)
- YouTube (Similar to Facebook)
And the list goes on. All of these "super valuable" one word domains aren't worth shit if nobody is willing to pay you money for them! Now the trend seems to be make up a word of your own! I guess all the engineers and start up companies didn't feel the initial 20 grand to get going was worth it, said the hell with it, and made up a word. Now it's almost cool not to use a standard English word.
Let's take a look at some one word domains!
www.mountain.com
This website doesn't exist! Nothing there but adsense!

www.purple.com A purple screen loads. USELESS!

www.bookstore.com OK, this is two words but
SURELY this URL
will have something useful like...I don't know
a book store maybe?
...
NOPE!

Ok, maybe "Book" and "Store" together was too abstract. How about something more straight forward like,
www.desktopcomputer.com
Yet another typical squatter's page. USELESS!

What's my point? I guess what I'm saying is, it's sad they squandered their own business but I'm kind of glad they did. These kind of maggot leaches have no new ideas. They have nothing to contribute to society and sure as hell nothing to contribute to the net. They are like today's internet "Social Media Entrepreneurs", they have no skills, they just pretent they have a service and leech off people that do have skills. Well, that's my rant agree with it or not...

Domain name squatters have shot themself in the foot, and deservedly so!
